Flatpicking Guitar Lesson Number One (continued)

Right Hand Exercises

Exercise 3:

Exercise 3 combines picking and strumming. The picking here is a down stroke followed by an up stroke on both the single string picking and the strumming. This picking is called alternating picking and is typical for eighth notes. The mechanics are different than the rest stroke. I call this the "swing stroke" because the pick swings up and over the string below on the downstroke so that the downstroke can be followed by an upstroke. Whereas the rest stroke presses downward, this swing stroke swings upwards slightly. In order to learn how to flatpick both the rest stroke and swing stroke should be practiced.
